WCCI, July 2010, Barcelona (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.fh-koeln.de\/%7Ekonen\/Publikationen\/WCCI-10_wii-gesture.pdf\">PDF<\/a>)\n<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\n\tAbstract:\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tSlow Feature Analysis (SFA) has been established<br \/>\n\tas a robust and versatile technique from the neurosciences to<br \/>\n\tlearn slowly varying functions from quickly changing signals.<br \/>\n\tRecently, the method has been also applied to classification<br \/>\n\ttasks. Here we apply SFA for the first time to a time series<br \/>\n\tclassification problem originating from gesture recognition. The<br \/>\n\tgestures used in our experiments are based on acceleration<br \/>\n\tsignals of the Bluetooth Wiimote controller (Nintendo). We<br \/>\n\tshow that SFA achieves results comparable to the well-known<br \/>\n\tRandom Forest predictor in shorter computation time, given<br \/>\n\ta sufficient number of training patterns. However &ndash; and this<br \/>\n\tis a novelty to SFA classification &ndash; we discovered that SFA<br \/>\n\trequires the number of training patterns to be strictly greater<br \/>\n\tthan the dimension of the nonlinear function space. If too few<br \/>\n\tpatterns are available, we find that the model constructed by<br \/>\n\tSFA severely overfits and leads to high test set errors.
